DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AMERICA AND FRANCE 3
Eating out:
In the states if you stay in a restaurant for more than an an hour the waiter is trying to rush you out so that he can make more money during his shift. In France there is no turn over expected nor are you usually given the bill until you ask the waiter for it yourself. For the most part this is because the French way of life which, especially in the south which is more Mediterranean, is laid back and very very relaxed. There is no hustle expected from your waiters because you are expected to want to enjoy the experience of eating out. Most Americans who expect speedy service may be turned off by this but it offers you a chance to take in the sights, smells and sounds of France.
Also when diner is over the price that is on your bill is the price that you pay. THERE IS NO TIPPING IN FRANCE. Don’t worry about leaving the amount on the table and walking away. If the bill is E 30,90 (notice the comma not the period) feel free to round to the nearest Euro but do not leave that typical 15%.
French tip: The bill please / L’addition s’il vous plait / [ L-add-ition sill vu plai ]
